Look for a Roast Date, Not a Best-Before Date

A best-before date can be a year out and tell you nothing about when the coffee was actually roasted. A roast date is the only number that matters. If a listing doesn't show one, that's worth asking about before you buy — or just moving on.

Buy What You'll Finish in Three Weeks

Coffee is at its best in roughly the first two to three weeks after roasting. A big bag that sits half-full in your cabinet for two months isn't a deal — it's coffee going flat before you get to it. Smaller, more frequent orders beat bulk buying here.

Check How It Ships

Beans shipped whole, in a bag with a one-way valve, hold up far better in transit than pre-ground coffee in a plain bag. Whole bean should be the default unless you have a specific reason to buy ground.
