It Takes More Than One Farm

The Peru on our shelf doesn't come from one farm. That's something I didn't fully understand until I went looking into where this coffee actually comes from before we started bagging it as Wanderlight.
Most coffee in Peru grows on plots you could walk across in twenty minutes. A hectare, maybe two, usually somewhere in the Andes between four and six thousand feet, where the air is thin enough that the cherries ripen slow and the beans come out dense and a little more complex for it. No single grower up there produces enough on their own to fill a shipping container, let alone keep a roastery supplied season after season. So the smallholders pool what they pick. Washing stations, drying patios, warehouses, trucks down the mountain, all of it shared, built because nobody could do this alone and everybody needed it done.
I think about that every time I open a new bag of Wanderlight. It isn't one person's harvest. It's dozens of them, picked by hand on hillsides I will probably never see, dried and sorted together before anyone decides which lot is good enough to call single origin.
The name makes it sound like one source, one story. It's really a lot of people agreeing to trust each other with the thing they grew.
That's not so different from running this shop, if I'm honest. I used to think I'd eventually get organized enough to do all of it myself. I haven't. I don't think that was ever really the point. The roasting, the shipping, the cup you'll pour tomorrow morning, all of it passed through more hands than mine before it got anywhere near yours.
Make it the way you'd make something grown at altitude. Slower than you want to. Patient with the bloom. Trusting that something you didn't build alone turned out fine anyway.
That's most of what I think this place is for. Not just the coffee. A small, standing reminder that nobody gets anywhere by themselves, and that isn't a failure of anything, it's just how the good things get made. Belonging comes before becoming. Before anyone's earned a single thing, they're already worth showing up for. That's the starting point here, every morning, whether I remember to say it out loud or not.
Choose to be kind. Choose to be grateful. Choose to be happy.
