Nobody Needs an Occasion

I keep a bag of coffee in the cabinet that isn't for me.
It's Hearth & Hazel, the hazelnut one, and if you asked me to rank my own cups I probably wouldn't put it at the top. Too sweet for my taste most mornings. But it's not there for my mornings. It's there for when someone needs something and I don't have time to think about what.
That's most of what generosity actually looks like, in my experience. Not the big gesture everyone plans for weeks. The thing that's already on the shelf when the moment shows up uninvited β a neighbor who just had a rough week, a friend who mentions in passing she hasn't slept, someone moving into a new place with nothing in the kitchen yet. You don't go shopping for that. You reach for what's already there.
Hazelnut works for this better than almost anything else in the shop. It's approachable. Medium roast, $19.99 for a 12oz bag, and it reads as a gift even though it's really just coffee β warm, a little sweet, the kind of flavor that doesn't ask the person drinking it to have sophisticated taste in order to enjoy it. That matters more than people think. A gift that requires explanation isn't really a gift. It's a lecture with a bow on it.
So I don't wait for an occasion. I keep the hazelnut on hand the way some people keep a spare umbrella by the door. Not because I expect rain every day. Because when it comes, I don't want to be caught without something to hand over.
Every person who walks into your day, whether they knock first or not, is worth that kind of readiness. Not because they earned it. Just because they're there, and that's enough reason.
Choose to be kind. Choose to be grateful. Choose to be happy.
