The Softest Part of the Morning
Share
There's a specific minute in my morning that I've come to protect fiercely — the one between when the kettle clicks off and when the rest of the house wakes up. No emails, no lists, no version of me that has to be capable yet. Just steam rising off a cup and the quiet permission to sit still for a moment before the day asks anything of me.
I didn't always have this. For years my mornings were a sprint from alarm to inbox, coffee gulped somewhere in between like a chore I was checking off. It took me a long time to understand that the ritual wasn't optional — it was the thing that made everything after it possible. Belonging comes before becoming, and that's true for a day the same way it's true for a life. I can't ask myself to be productive, patient, or kind before I've let myself simply arrive.
Lately that quiet minute belongs to Velvet Dawn, our French vanilla coffee — and there's something almost funny about how much comfort a little vanilla bean and soft caramel can deliver before 7am. It's not a complicated cup. It doesn't ask you to think about elevation or processing method with a furrowed brow. It just tastes like being taken care of, which on some mornings is exactly what I need it to do.
I think a lot of us were taught that mornings are for optimizing — the perfect routine, the productivity stack, the five things you're supposed to do before 8am to win the day. I understand the impulse. But the mornings I remember most aren't the efficient ones. They're the slow ones. The ones where I let the coffee actually be warm in my hands for a minute before I did anything useful with it.
That's really what GiaNina has always been trying to hand back to people — not a faster morning, but a fuller one. A minute that's actually yours, made a little sweeter by something warm in your hands. Gia and I built this whole business on that instinct long before either of us had a product to sell: that hospitality is love expressed through action, and sometimes the smallest act of hospitality is toward yourself, at 6am, before anyone else is even awake to receive it.
So if your mornings have gotten away from you lately, I'd gently suggest reclaiming just one minute of one. Not the whole routine — just the part where you let the cup be warm before you let the day be loud.
Choose to be kind. Choose to be grateful. Choose to be happy.
