Iron Ritual - 6 Bean Blend whole bean coffee, 12oz bag

What It Takes to Get Six Beans to Agree

Someone asked me last week why I don't just pick "the best bean" and build every blend around it. It's a fair question, and it took me a minute to find the right answer. The truth is, there isn't one best bean — there's only what a bean does well, and what it needs another bean nearby to do for it.

Single origin coffee tells you one story from one place, and I love that clarity. But a blend is a different kind of craft entirely. It's not about finding the loudest voice in the room — it's about finding the right combination of voices. A bean grown at high altitude might bring bright acidity and a clean finish, but on its own it can feel thin in the body. Pair it with something grown lower, heavier, earthier, and suddenly you have weight underneath the brightness. Add a third bean roasted a shade darker for a touch of smoke and sweetness, and the cup stops being one note and starts being a whole conversation.

That's what we were after with Iron Ritual, our six bean blend. Six origins, six different reasons for being in the cup, none of them there to overpower the others. It took a lot of trial and a lot of small batches that didn't make the cut before we landed on a combination where every bean actually mattered — where you could taste the dark roast's boldness without losing the complexity underneath it. It's the kind of coffee that rewards a slow morning, when you're not rushing past the first sip.

I think about that process more than I probably should, because it mirrors something I believe about people, too. None of us are meant to carry a room by ourselves. We're better in combination — different strengths, different histories, sitting next to each other and making something none of us could make alone. Belonging comes before becoming, and that's as true at a table full of people as it is in a blend of six beans that had to learn to sit well together.

If you're the kind of person who likes to know what's actually in your cup and why it's there — not just that it tastes good, but the reasoning behind it — I hope you'll pour yourself a cup of Iron Ritual sometime and taste that trial and error for yourself. And if you don't, I hope wherever you're pouring from this morning, it reminds you that hospitality is love expressed through action, one small cup at a time.

Choose to be kind. Choose to be grateful. Choose to be happy.
